Electronic delivery of journal articles via interlibrary loan

Did you know that when you submit a request for a journal article via interlibrary loan, you can ask that it is sent to you electronically?

Just enter your email address in the "Address you want this item sent to" field on the form.

New online encyclopedia

International Encyclopedia of Organization Studies

The Library now has online access to the International Encyclopedia of Organization Studies.

The encyclopedia includes essay length entries on topics including: management theory; human resource management; leadership theory; organizational behaviour and knowledge and learning.

There are numerous access points to the content – via the readers guide, an A-Z of entries and an index, as well as a keyword search function. The Readers Guide is particularly useful as it allows you to browse through the thematic categories, giving you a good overview of the types of topics covered.

Each essay includes a conceptual overview of the subject, critical commentary and future directions, suggestions for further readings and links to related topics that can be found elsewhere in the encyclopedia.

The encyclopedia will be an excellent resource for students needing background information on management topics. It can be accessed by the library catalogue, the Business and Management subject guide or via the Sage eReference entry on the A-Z database list.

Also available on Sage eReference platform are the Encyclopedia of business ethics and society and 21st century management: a reference handbook.

Borrowing books from other NZ University Libraries

Massey University Library is a member of the ULANZ reciprocal borrowing agreement among 7 of the 8 New Zealand Universities. This gives registered Massey University Library borrowers (i.e. staff and students) the right to enrol for limited borrowing privileges at those university libraries.

The other universities offering this service are AUT (Auckland), Waikato (Hamilton), Victoria (Wellington), Lincoln (Christchurch), Canterbury (Christchurch) and Otago (Dunedin). This may well be a service that is useful for extramural students living in these regions, so please publicise it to them.

Study Guides – Information on Library Services

Each year the Library provides information on the services and resources available for extramural students. This study guide insert (available from the Library web site) should be downloaded annually and added to extramural study guides so that students get correct and current information.

If you wish to include Library information more specifically targeted at students enrolled in your course, please contact College Liaison Services staff.

New Journals Page on Library Web Site

The Library has replaced the E-Journals page on its web site with a set of new pages giving more comprehensive information about journals, in both print and electronic formats.
Included is information on publishing in journals, journal citations and rankings, and the process for obtaining new journal subscriptions.

Access to e-journal packages is still made available via the new pages, but if you had bookmarked the e-journals page you will need to change the link. We apologise for any inconvenience.

If you are looking for a specific journal title – search the Library catalogue (or click on the Journals tab from the Catalogue home page).

Database Trial - Scopus

The Library is currently trialling Elsevier's Scopus database (through until the end of June 2008). Scopus is a multidiscplinary database - with greater breadth than Web of Science (about 4000 more titles) and with some of the equivalent citation searching features. Its coverage of "regional" journals is also broader than Web of Science currently provides. Universities and research institutions in the United Kingdom are using Scopus as a way of tracking citations, and several of the New Zealand university libraries also subscribe.

We would welcome your feedback on Scopus - both for citation tracking and topic searching.
The Library is not planning to subscribe to Scopus instead of Web of Science, rather it be would be complementary to our current database holdings (should funding permit).

Access the Scopus trial via the Library web site's "What's on Trial" page. Feedback can be submitted via the Trials page, or by emailing your comments to libcol@massey.ac.nz.

New Business Librarian at Turitea

My name is Alison Wallbutton and I am the new Business Librarian at Turitea, working alongside Jane Brooker. You can contact us via our combined email address: buslib@massey.ac.nz or contact me on 7344 or Jane on ext. 7919.

So what's my background? I hold a BSc and a MLIS from Victoria University of Wellington. My Masters research project looked at how Taranaki businesses made use of the resources of public libraries in the region. Some of my recent work experience has involved providing information and analysis to Fonterra staff working in the consumer products area. This gave me "real world" experience in areas such as gathering market intelligence, product development and innovation processes and knowledge management. My most recent role has been that of Library Manager at the International Pacific College here in Palmerston North. I am also a student at Massey University and I'm currently undertaking a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration.

While I have your attention this is an opportune time to remind you of the services we provide to aid you in both your teaching and research.

We offer library skills sessions for postgraduate students, either in using the databases or in EndNote. Annual sessions are valuable for keeping up to date with changes in the database so as to make the best use of library resources. Please contact us if you would like the Library to run an information skills or EndNote class for your students in the second semester.Staff and postgraduate students are welcome to visit us for a research consultation. This is a chance for more focussed help on specific topics and can provide the basis for ongoing contact between a researcher and the Library over the course of their research.We purchase books for the collection on a regular basis and we are more than happy to receive recommendations from staff. If you wish to recommend a title for purchase, you can either contact us directly, or fill out the suggest an item for purchase form on the Library web site.

MasseyLink - Have your Say

Back in January we told you about MasseyLink, the little icon that appears next to records on your database searches - by clicking on it you will often achieve a much more direct link to the article than by searching the library catalogue and even if you don't MasseyLink will automatically open the catalogue for you with details for the appropriate journal.Our staff have been monitoring and fixing problems as they occur and so far progress has been pretty smooth. At the library we generally hear from you only when things don't work as they should, which is as it should be, but this time we would really like to hear from you if you have found MasseyLink useful or if you have suggestions of how it could be improved. If you have used MasseyLink please take a moment to email us with your reaction and ideas.

MasseyLink: what does it mean and why is it appearing in my searches?

Some of you will have noticed when doing database searches that the little icon above is appearing on results lists and alongside records. As the name suggests, it is a link between the database and Massey’s holdings. The advantage it gives over the current system of linking is that in the best case scenario it will take you directly to the article in a couple of clicks. From the Web of Science results screen:

Straight to the full-text article!

Yes, the full article with none of that dull scribbling down of volume and issue numbers, or multitude of clicks through the layers of the catalogue. If a direct link to the item is not provided, click on "Search the catalogue". MasseyLink will automatically populate a catalogue search for you, so you can see immediately if Massey University Library has the item. If not, you can then use MasseyLink to request an Interloan. All of your options for obtaining the item you need are available in one convenient location.

However, you will have noted that this is the best case scenario: there are a few hiccups at present, as the system is still being implemented. If you come across something strange when trying to follow a MasseyLink, please use the "Report a problem" link to let us know.
Feel free to ask us questions about this. We're very excited about MasseyLink's potential. Even at this stage MasseyLink can be a useful tool and should be a great help to searchers once it is fully up and running.

Study Guides

We’ve had some queries recently about putting study guides on Reserve and would like to take this opportunity to clarify our policy.

The Distance Library Service holds a full set of study guides to enable them to assist extramural students. These are for Library staff use only and cannot be put on Reserve. However, individual study guides are occasionally made available to internal students on request. If you do wish to place study guides on Reserve for internal students please supply a copy of the study guide and send it to the Reserve Collection, Library together with the completed Temporary Material section of the Reserve Material Placement Form.

Changes to Requesting in the Library catalogue

Upgrade Period:

From 5 pm Tuesday 30th October to noon Wednesday 31st October you will be unable to make requests via the Library catalogue. During this time you will still be able to request items. Please contact us

New Request Features

Your requests will instantly appear on your patron record.

You will have the ability to enter a “Cancel if not filled by” date. Your request will automatically expire after the date that you have entered. We recommend you enter a date that will allow sufficient time for the request to arrive.

With the majority of requests you will no longer be asked to choose a specific copy unless the title has more than one volume separate components e.g. CDs, tapes, booklets, etc.

Online Newspapers for the News Junkie!

We have all grown used to reading newspapers over the internet in recent years but there is often the sense that we are missing out on the whole experience - all the local politics, human interest stories and small town scandals that never make it to the websites or disappear within a few days.

The Library's newest service Library.PressDisplay is a "newspaper view" database which shows each newspaper exactly as it was published. Over 500 newspapers and magazines are searchable by keyword, language, and country. Other features include sound integration, advanced searching, and a 60-day rolling archive. Newspapers are available from over 65 countries, including New Zealand, Australia, China, Germany, India, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, United Kingdom, and the United States. New Zealand titles include the Manawatu Standard, New Zealand Herald and Dominion Post. Coverage of other countries includes the serious dailies such as the Washington Post and the Guardian as well as the tabloids.

Library.PressDisplay will be of great interest to homesick students and staff but is also a very extensive collection of international media for the serious researcher.

It can be accessed through the Article Databases List from the Library's homepage. There is a limit of three Massey users at any one time so you may occasionally be denied access.

Extramural Study Guides in the Library

The Library at Turitea has a full set of study guides available as an aid for the Distance Library Service. Individual folders are occasionally made available to internal students requesting to see them, however they are not held on reserve and issued to students unless this is specifically requested by course controllers. This collection contains the 12 volume Blackwell Encyclopedia of Management along with a number of other reference handbooks in the areas of business, management and economics. IRG Deep Archive

Thanks to funding from Dept of Finance, Banking & Property (Turitea) and Dept of Commerce (Auckland) the Library is now able to provide access to the IRG Deep Archive for 2007 and 2008. We have subscribed to the IRG Online Research database for many years, providing access to financial profiles on major companies listed on the New Zealand and Australian Stock Exchanges, and this extended subscription allows Massey University staff and students to search backfiles.

Former Business Librarian Heather Lamond has been seconded for one year to the position of Acting Head of the Distance Library Service. Heather has given fabulous service to the College, and the Library will continue to have the benefit of her skills. We are fortunate to have been able to second Barbara Blake (previously working as a liaison librarian at the Hokowhitu Library) to the position. Barbara will be working 9am-1pm each day, for the academic year.

EBSCOHost Changes Links

Recently EBSCOHost changed their web address from "epnet" to "ebscohost".

If you have embedded links from any of the EBSCOHost databases, for example Business Source Premier or Academic Search Elite, into your web pages or WebCT class pages, you will need change these links.

Just what are RSS feeds?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary and is a technology designed to help you keep up with updates to your favourite websites. RSS allows you to check for new updates to a site without having to visit the site.

You will need either to download RSS feed reader software or to register with a web-based service like Google Reader or Bloglines. Users of FireFox can subscribe to feeds using Live Bookmarks while Internet Explorer 7 has RSS feed capability built in.

You can now use RSS feeds to check out the latest additions to the Library Catalogue in Business and Management.

Click on the link below to subscribe to the new books feed:

Then, every week when the new books list is populated, you’ll receive a list of them (linked to the Library Catalogue) in your feed reading software.

There are many other RSS feeds available, on any site where you see the RSS icon or XML button you should be able to subscribe to a feed.

GMID - Euromonitor has a new interface

National Library websites outage from 2pm Saturday 16 June

Reading History Feature Now Available

A new feature in the Library Catalogue enables you to keep a record of items that you have borrowed, if you choose to do so.

From the Library Catalogue Home Page click on Log In and enter your details (ID number and PIN).Click on the My Reading History button at the right of the screen.Click on Opt In to enable the Catalogue to record details of items that you have borrowed.

Once Reading History has been set up, every item that you borrow from then on will display on your record. You can choose to delete items from your record (all or one-by-one) if you no longer wish to retain a record of them.

With Reading History turned on, when you do a search on the Catalogue you can choose to exclude items you have already borrowed.

If you want to opt out of Reading History, simply click on that button when logged in to your Patron Record and select Opt Out. Note that all data will be lost so that if you opt in again at a later date the Reading History will start from then and won’t include earlier items.

Services for Academic Staff from the Liaison Librarians

As we move into the middle of the year, this would be an opportune time to remind you of the services the Library provides to aid you in both your teaching and your research.

We offer library skills sessions for postgraduate students, either in using the databases or in EndNote. As there are so many changes to our online databases and journals each year we strongly advise your students to attend a session annually so as to make the best use of library resources. If you would like the Library to run an information skills or EndNote class for your students in the second semester, now would be a good time to book.

Liaison Librarians are happy to arrange training sessions for your Department or School, for small groups or for individuals. We can teach you how to search specialist resources like Brookers, GMID and Infos.

If you have developed a WebCT course, or intend to develop one, you can insert links so that your students can access journal articles electronically. We can help you identify citations and facilitate the provision of a stable URL for your WebCT page. Alternatively we can prepare dynamic searches that can be hosted on your WebCT pages which will bring the latest research on a topic to your students.

Staff, as well as postgraduate students, can come and sit down with Liaison Librarians for a research consultation. This is a chance for more focussed help on specific topics and can provide the basis for ongoing contact between a researcher and the Library over the course of their research.

The Liaison Librarians purchase books for the collection on a regular basis via profile alerts from major publishing agents and through continued reading of reviews. We also receive notification from Bennetts of titles which are set and recommended texts. We are more than happy to receive recommendations from staff so if you wish to recommend a title for purchase, you can either contact us directly, or fill out the suggest an item for purchase form on the Library web site.

The Library holds an annual serials review. Any suggestions for subscription can be forwarded to a Liaison Librarian. In general, serials reviews need to be cost neutral, so any recommended new titles will need to be accompanied by some suggestions for cancellations of an equivalent value.

We are available to meet with you and your colleagues to discuss the collections held by the library, any of these services and also new initiatives such as the Digital Commons.

New Trial - Blackwell Reference Online: Business and Economics Collection

We are pleased to announce that we currently have a trial to Blackwell Reference Online: Business and Economics Collection. This collection is comprised of the 12 volume Blackwell Encyclopedia of Management along with a number of other reference handbooks in the areas of business, management and economics.

You may recall that we trialled this encyclopedia last year through a different vendor and subsequently didn’t purchase due to the reservations that we had about format and usability. We are pleased to report that this time around, the online format and functionality have greatly improved and are meeting our expectations for a fully searchable online reference encyclopedia. We think that this would be a valuable addition to the collection, especially for extramural students so we are keen to receive your input whilst we consider this package for the collection.

Please endeavour to have a look at this collection of electronic books and check their suitability for your students. Any feedback would be appreciated by Friday 29th June.

Business Source Premier - phrase searching

We have recently changed Business Source Premier search functionality to align it with Web of Science, our Library Catalogue and other databases in the way it phrase searches.

In order to force a phrase search use double quotation marks around your phrase e.g. "change management"

n.b. entering change management will search for change AND management.

Library Catalogue update

The Library Catalogue has been updated this morning to a new temporary interface.
This has changed the look of the catalogue markedly, although the data underneath remains the same.
We are still doing major work on the look and functionality of the catalogue, so further changes will occur over the next few months.

Please note that EndNote X is not backward compatible with EndNote 7 or earlier. While you will be able to open your existing EndNote 7 libraries in EndNote X, once converted they cannot be used in EndNote 7.

If you plan to work with EndNote on a variety of computers, you should ensure that all machines have the same version of EndNote installed.

Upcoming Library Catalogue outage

The Massey University Library system is undergoing a major upgrade over the next few months. Unfortunately this means the Library Catalogue will be unavailable for all use on 30 and 31 January 2007 while we migrate to a new server.

Library staff will be able to issue books and other materials as usual, however requests and renewals will be delayed by a few days and the Catalogue will not be accessible for searching at this time. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, and will advise of any other known down-times.

Market Data from the Wall Street Journal

The Wall Street Journal Online offers data on international markets through their Markets Data Center. Some detailed data is not available to non-subscribers, but there is a lot of information freely available to all.

PBRF relief! - New and Improved Author Searching and Citation Reports on Web of Science

Major New Features Available

Improved Author Searching: Author Finder

Web of Science now has improved the options available for searching authors - especially those with common names. Clicking the Author Finder link gives you the option of allowing for:

variant name entries
multiple names (for example, a person's maiden name and married name)
subject area of the author
institutional affiliation(s)

In addition to this, instead of only using first name initials, Web of Science will from now on be indexing names as they appear in publications in a bid to simplify the identification of authors.

Citation Reports for Search Results

Now you can create your citation portfolio for PBRF with ease! This new feature is ideal for creating a report of an individual author's papers and their citations. (However, you can also create a citation report of any search set result.) It produces graphs of papers published and cited each year, as well as citation counts and average citation rates for individual papers. You can also remove self-citations at a click.

The Citation Report option is available in the box of options on the right of any search results list.

EndNote versions

You may be aware that the ITS labs and the Library Information Commons will be upgraded to EndNote version X over the summer semester.

Now would be an opportune time to check which version you are running on your office (or home) PC and think about updating.

It is our recommendation that unless you need to remain on version 7 because of compatibility, that you upgrade to Version X. See the Library EndNote FAQs for more information on compatibility.

Please Note: While EndNote versions 8, 9 and X will open libraries created in EndNote 7, the reverse is not true. EndNote 7 cannot open libraries created in, or saved by, later versions. If you are using EndNote in conjunction with Microsoft Word on more than one computer (e.g. at home and on-campus), you should ensure that both machines have the same version installed.

Blackwell Encyclopedia of Management Library

We have been waiting for the availability of an online business encyclopedia for a number of years now so we are pleased to announce that we currently have a trial to the Blackwell Encyclopedia of Management Library until 31st December 2006.

The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Management Library is comprised of the 12 volume encyclopedia along with 8 additional companion titles (a number of which we already hold). This encyclopedia covers major developments in: knowledge management; globalization; new technologies; ethics and governance-related issues; technology and innovation; e-business; emerging markets; networks and alliances; new organizations forms; and new avenues of business growth.

Given the expense of this title, we have some reservations about format and usability so therefore are keen to receive your input whilst we consider this title for the collection. Please endeavor to have a look at this encyclopedia and check its suitability for your students. Any feedback would be appreciated by Wednesday 15th November.

Massey Digital Commons now accepting articles!

Making your research visible on the web is a great way of stimulating interest in your work and ensuring that your articles will be read and cited. Massey's Digital Commons has been open for theses since August and is now accepting articles as well. Articles should be submitted as either Microsoft Word files or as PDFs, but first you need to ensure that your publisher allows "self archiving" of this sort. Check here for Publisher copyright policies & self-archiving. You can also check for a specific journal.

To submit your articles and papers first create an account which will give you a personal user page. (Email the Library for instructions on how to do this). The advantage of this is that once your articles have been uploaded you will have a single URL - i.e. a web address - that will give access to all of them. This URL can be placed on web pages and even incorporated into your email signature. You will also have an address for each individual piece of work - e.g. http://digitalcommons.massey.ac.nz/dissertations/adt-NZPU20060607-154500/

Once in the Digital Commons your work will be available to colleagues in institutions that do not subscribe to the journal it was published in - and to the world at large!

If you are after a quick and easy currency conversion, go to the Google Search engine and type in your conversion e.g. 190 GBP in NZD

Google will come back with the answer!
I've checked the answer with several other currency converters and it is very accurate.

World Development Reports - available full-text online

Digital Commons at Massey

The Library is pleased to announce the launch of the Digital Commons

This is a repository for research by Massey University staff and students – storing documents online and making them available for full-text searching and downloading.
The current focus is on Massey University masters and doctoral theses which are submitted to the Library and stored digitally. Contents of the Digital Commons are indexed by search engines (eg. Google) making the research accessible to an international audience. Statistics are readily available giving the number of times a thesis has been viewed (abstract or full-text). The first thesis which was added to the Digital Commons had been viewed 318 times as of 21 August. Many other universities are using the same Digital Commons software and you can view their repositories.

After a small but successful pilot project with theses from Museum Studies, we are now welcoming voluntary submission of other Masters and Doctoral theses. If you would like to submit a copy of your thesis for inclusion in the Digital Commons please click here.
In the longer term, the Digital Commons will be used to make articles, reports and conference presentations from Massey University staff available online.

Problems with Business Source Premier search results

The Library is currently experiencing some problems with the Ebsco databases (eg. Business Source Premier, Academic Search Elite), giving unreliable search results in many instances.

Library Serials Review Deadline

The deadline for responses to the proposed cancellations of journal subscriptions is Friday 11 August. The list of titles was circulated to departments on 27 July and a revised list based on the feedback received will be sent out on Friday 18th.

The cancelling of journals is not something that the Library undertakes lightly and this year's exercise has been necessitated by the university's request for financial stringency combined with the tendency of journal price increases to run ahead of the rate of inflation. The strategy adopted for business journals has been to target titles that are relatively expensive as providing the greatest savings for the least impact unless there is clear evidence that they are of critical importance and are used extensively. We have also looked into subscriptions that are duplicated in print and online and, where we are able to, have suggested cancelling the print copies.

One electronic journal package - Taylor & Francis - will be cancelled because its cost structure has become insupportable. Individual titles from this publisher to which we subscribed before taking up the package will continue unless a further decision is made, as has been done in some cases, to cancel them on the grounds of cost and low use. Titles that were not previously held and that came to us as part of the T & F package will no longer be received and will disappear from the Library catalogue.

When cancellations are made interlibrary loan becomes an alternative means of acquiring articles and it is acknowledged that this does involve passing some costs on to departments. The major part of the cost is still carried by the Library and in the case of expensive journals that are infrequently used this proves to be much less expensive than a subscription. While we are sensitive to the question of whether a journal is held by other New Zealand libraries it is worth noting that the Library no longer charges an extra amount for overseas interloans and they are often obtained more quickly than those sourced locally.

Requests are received from time to time for new journal titles - it will be unusually difficult to institute any new subscriptions unless a substantial saving is made on existing expenditure.

Research Consultations

Both postgraduate students and staff can benefit from a one-on-one research consultation with a Liaison Librarian.

In a consultation we will typically be working with the person’s own topic; showing appropriate information sources and helping to formulate search strategies. This is a chance for more focussed help on specific topics and can provide the basis for ongoing contact between a researcher and the Library over the course of their studies.

Research Consultations can also cover the use of EndNote, either introductory training or solving specific EndNote issues.

A research consultation is especially useful at the beginning of a thesis or research project, before the student has wasted a lot of time or fallen into bad habits!

Important changes to Web of Science

ISI have made a fundamental change to the way that Web of Knowledge (including Web of Science) databases search.

When using the Topic Search or Quick Search options, search terms are no longer automatically "phrase" searched, they are instead automatically "anded".
This is similar to the way that the Google search engines operate.

For example, instead of entering total quality management AND change
you should now enter "total quality management" AND change

N.B. the quotation marks are necessary to force an exact phrase search
N.B. the AND is not necessary, but helps to show you the structure of your search

1: Encyclopedia of Information Systems

Salutations, this is the first of an irregular series of posts highlighting online reference resources available through your Massey Library. I will mix and match between resources of particular interest to the College of Business and general resources.

Our first resource is the Encyclopedia of Information Systems from Elsevier. This encyclopaedia has both general and technical information about major elements, issues, opinions, and key studies in information systems. Topics covered include electronic commerce, management support systems, game theory, globalization, copyright and piracy.

It is useful, not only to the staff and students in the Department of Information Systems, but to staff and students in the School of Business.

So when you have five minutes, check the Encyclopedia of Information Systems out and other Reference Resources available through your Massey Library website.

Aviation Resources consolidating at Turitea

With aviation no longer being taught internally at the Albany Campus, Library staff are moving most of Albany's aviation books and journals back to the Turitea Campus Library. The Albany Campus Library will retain a few books for which there numerous copies already at Turitea (to cater for extramural demand).
The specialist aviation print journals will also move back to Turitea, with the exception of Human Factors, which is used extensively by other Albany staff. This journal is also available online, so aviation students and staff at Turitea will not be disadvantaged.

New shelving is being erected on Level 3 of the Turitea Library and the books are being relabelled and having their location details changed on the Library catalogue. Please contact one of the Turitea Liaison Librarians Buslib@massey.ac.nz if you need any of the books in the meanwhile.

Google Scholar and Library Subscriptions

Google Scholar is now listed in the Databases A-Z pages on the library website.

Library Information for Extramural Study Guides

The Business Reference Suite

Provided by Responsive Database Services, the suite is made up of three different databases; Business and Industry, Business & Management Practices and the Tablebase. These databases index more than 2000 leading worldwide business sources, and over 60% of content is full-text.

The Business & Industry database has a strong global focus on company, industry and product information.

Business & Management Practices focuses on the processes, methods and strategies of managing a business.

Tablebase provides access to thousands of tables of numerical data. Search by company name, country, region, concept or industry.

These databases can be accessed through the Library's database list and will soon be on the Business & Management Subject Guide.

Afterhours EndNote Classes at Turitea Campus Library

College Liaison Librarians at the Turitea Campus will be running one hour introductory EndNote classes targeted particularly at extramural or part-time students who are unable to attend our regular sessions on Wednesdays at 12pm.

Import of Google Scholar Records into EndNote

Users of Google Scholar often ask if it is possible to capture bibliographic records into EndNote - happily this functionality has now been added. From Google Scholar open Scholar Preferences and set the Bibliography Manager to Show links to import citations into EndNote. Save the preferences and then each time you search on Google Scholar most of the records will show an Import into EndNote link. Click on this and you will be prompted for the EndNote Library to save the record into.

You should be aware that quality control on Google Scholar is not always as good as on paid-for databases. Imported references do not include abstracts or keywords and journal titles may be abbreviated. In any case you should generally (always?) repeat your Google Scholar search on a formal database like Web of Science - Google Scholar does not include references from some major publishers like Elsevier.

IT help for students in the Library

In the modern era university study requires that students are able to use standard information technology - word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software and a basic understanding of operating systems are more or less taken for granted while some courses demand more advanced skills. Students these days are generally pretty IT-savvy but as anyone who has lost a file or had a document mysteriously reformat itself knows, it is sometimes necessary to seek help from a higher power in the form of an IT expert.

The Library's Information Commons has two student-friendly IT Assistants - Summer (Natsuki Shimizu) and Jamie - who are available to deal with a huge range of issues, from the occasional student who has never used a computer before to the desperate PhD student needing to produce a perfect document by yesterday. No problem is too big or too small, no question too basic - and if they don't know the answer they will point the student in the right direction. Jamie and Summer are available from 8am to 6pm weekdays and make the needs of students their No 1 priority.

If you have developed a WebCT course, or intend to develop one, you can insert links to electronic journal articles. There is no copyright restriction on posting the URL of an article from any electronic journal listed in the Massey Library Catalogue. Initial queries including citations should be directed to your Liaison Librarian. It is necessary for the Library to create a special URL so that the article can be accessed from off-campus through the proxy-server. The Library's Bibliographic Services staff will email the URLs directly to you within 48 hours of receipt of the request. Should you have any problems with the URLs you have been given, please contact the Collection Services staff.

Google Finance is an early beta product that offers a broad range of information about North American stocks, mutual funds and public and private companies along with charts, news and fundamental financial data.

How is Google Finance different from existing financial websites?
Google Finance offers an easier way to search for stocks, mutual funds, public and private companies. Further, Google Finance also offers a broad range of company news and information in order to deliver more relevant, unbiased results in a clean, uncluttered user interface.

Here are some specific Google Finance features:

Company Search — With Google Finance you can search for stocks, mutual funds, public and private companies, using both company names and (where available) ticker symbols.
Interactive Charts — Google Finance charts correlate market data with corresponding dated news stories to help you determine if there is a relationship between them (for instance, by seeing news stories that came out about a certain company in the context of what that company's stock did that day). You can also click and drag the charts to see different time periods and zoom in to see more detailed information.
News and More News — Google Finance incorporates our Google News service, which gathers stories from more than 4,500 English news sources worldwide. How does Google Finance work? Where does your financial content come from?
Google Finance works by combining content we've licensed from financial data providers with content we've crawled and indexed from the web. The result is an easier approach to helping you find and manage financial information online.

Of course, we recommend you use the Library databases like Factiva, GMID and Business Source Premier in conjunction with Google Finance when looking for company information. If you would like some help or training in the use of these databases, please contact your Liaison Librarian.

Well, they can still find a quiet corner to study, and possibly a paper journal issue to browse, but they are more likely to be joining the thousands of students using the Information Commons each day, discussing their work at a group study table, and enjoying a coffee at the Library café! Level 2 of the Library is a busy and noisy place: there are nearly 100 PCs where students can read their email, access their online paper, search databases for full-text journal articles, and write their assignment. Professional assistance is available from library and specialist IT staff, with someone available during all opening hours – we provide help but also take the opportunity to teach information literacy and IT skills. In addition, the café is open 9am – 5pm during the week, a vending machine provides cold drinks, and the growing demand for group study is supported in an increasing number of group discussion tables throughout the building.

For staff and students who prefer a quieter environment there are still a large number of individual study desks on each floor. However the Library has a strong sense of ‘place’ for students, a place to meet, talk, study, research, and even eat now we have relaxed our food and drink policy! Please come and take a look some time…

Plans for the Information Commons in 2006 include a trial of a colour printer (with ITS), a scanner and walk-in access to a limited number of databases for visitors to Massey University.

And how are your students using the library to find information? As our numbers of online resources increase, book checkout statistics are slightly dropping each year (this is a relatively common pattern across tertiary libraries). It looks like students are embracing the online world, but still need skills to find, evaluate and correctly use online information. And sometimes they might be best to start with a traditional reference resource or text book which may not be available electronically! Results from our Rodski satisfaction survey in 2005 indicate that many students are struggling to work through databases to find a full text journal article that meets their needs. We see these students individually but are also very happy to provide hands-on classes for your course so they have these essential skills.

· Overdue notices will soon be sent only one day after the due date, rather than five days later (sorry – our current library system can’t manage reminder notices before the due date)

· Your College Liaison librarian can help you with the development of your online course. The abundance of ‘traditional library information’ that is now accessible online allows students to link directly from the online material you have provided to many of the actual documents you wish them to read. We can also help you to make sure that students in the virtual environment are able to develop independent information seeking skills.

Michael was most recently at the Open Polytechnic working in the area of Liaison and Reference, and on special projects. He also has valuable experience with distance education. Digital Commons (Institutional Repository) Demonstration

Hanna Perrett from Bepress (Berkeley Electronic Press) and Dan Hamid from ProQuest will be coming to the Turitea Library to talk about the benefits of an institutional repository and a Digital Commons from an academic staff point-of-view.

The Digital Commons software allows loading of dissertations, research papers, conference papers, pre-prints and even peer-reviewed journals, and making these available over the web to provide maximum visibility for this research. Many of the Australian universities have already developed such a repository.

To gain credit for RESKMAN3(A+B) staff will need to attend both the Introductory and Advanced EndNote sessions. The EndNote sessions will be run in a computer lab environment to enable hands-on practice.
EndNote, a database programme for storing and managing bibliographic references, is the University's preferred bibliographic management programme.
EndNote allows staff/researchers to:
create, store and manage references and citations;import and store references from electronic databases;

Sort and search references
create bibliographies instantly in a variety of bibliographic styles; and
insert citations into Microsoft (MS) word documents

University Library in 2006

Budget
The Library has received notice of its capital grant for the year (which pays for our books and journals). In particular, we have been able to increase the book budget across allocations by an average 7%, which should enable us to cope with book publishers’ increases and some movement in the New Zealand dollar. The allocation for electronic databases and e-journals includes an 8% increase for publishers’ prices, and the print (paper) serials (a diminishing portion nowadays of our collections budget) still allows for a 10% increases in publishers’ costs.
Of course, there is a certain nervousness about the value of the New Zealand dollar later in the year when we pay our subscription renewals. The budget includes a sum for such a contingency, and the Finance Section of the Registry also purchases forward currency for us (mostly in US dollars these days). We will continue to monitor currency movements carefully during the year, but generally the 2006 capital grant is good news for the Library, and further action will need to be taken only of the dollar drops severely.

Backfiles
At the end of 2005 we took advantage of the strong dollar to make some significant one-off purchases.
For business this included the purchase of subject backfiles for Elsevier’s Sciencedirect. Despite its name, ScienceDirect includes significant business titles, as it is really a database of all 1700 journal titles published by Elsevier, a major international publisher of academic titles. We have suggested to Elsevier several times that they need to remove the “Science” of ScienceDirect, but to no avail! The database is very useful because it has the full text of journal articles, and the general service is for the contents from 1995.
In 2004 ands late in 2005 we have been purchasing selective subject archives which go back to the first issue of each journal whenever it was published. Our first purchase in 2004 was the Business subject backfile (of 65 titles) and in late 2005 we bought the subject file for Economics, econometrics and finance (some 71 titles).
In additional we have been piloting some electronic books and have taken out a subscription to Safari’s e-books for business. This is well worth a look, and should be particularly useful for distance students.

Rodski Survey
In September 2005 the Library participated in the Rodski client satisfaction survey, and thank you to those who completed the online survey form.
Rodski is an independent company, and the library survey has been completed by all of the Australian university libraries and 4 of the 8 New Zealand university libraries, so it is very useful for benchmarking, as well as for the individual results. We have over 200 pages of specific comments from Massey library users and we are working our way through these at the moment.
The overall result was pleasing, with Rodski placing the library in the first quartile (top 25%) compared with the other libraries on their database. The greatest gap differential between expectation and performance was for library facilities and equipment. But in service quality, service delivery and library staff Massey ranked as well in the top 5 for the 15 Australasian university libraries who completed the survey in 2005.

Digital repository trial
In 2006, the Library will be trialling the ProQuest Digital Commons software, with some pilot projects for both digital theses and research papers, and making these available on the web.
Three other New Zealand university libraries will also be trialling this software. This is the precursor to the eventual establishment of an institutional repository, which is a much larger project, and for which Massey is an international partner in the RUBRIC project with a number of Australian universities, and with Gerrit Bahlman, our ITS Director, as a Board member.

Looking for Agricultural and Natural Resources statistics??

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service publishes a journal called Amber Waves in print and online.

It does, obviously, focus on American issues and statistics - but it is not often that you get something for nothing!

The subtitle of this site is: "The Economics of Food, Farming, Natural Resources, and Rural America." It's actually an online magazine, published five time a year (February, April, June, September, and November) by the ERS. It is available on the
Internet for free. The Internet version "offers additional articles and data between scheduled issues," and you can sign up for e-mail alerts. The full Internet version is available for download in PDF format. An archive is available, and the site is searchable.

Major New Source - ISI Proceedings

Conference papers are an important channel of academic communication but they can be frustratingly difficult to find! From the beginning of 2006 Massey Library is able to offer access to the ISI Proceedings database which is part of the ISI Web of Knowledge suite. ISI Proceedings covers conference papers published in journals and book series as well separately published proceedings.

It is searched using exactly the same protocols as Web of Science, CAB Abstracts and Current Contents. A really useful feature is the ability to search by Conference details so that if you remember that a conference on mechatronics was held in Boston you simply enter mechatronics and boston into the Conference field to see a list of papers.

As with other Web of Knowledge databases you can link to the Massey Library catalogue by clicking on the Holdings button of an individual record. If the record does not have a Holdings button it is worth searching the Library catalogue separately - a keyword search using a number of words from the conference name and its location is a really effective way of doing this.

As part of the upgrade to the PowerSearch interface you may have experienced Time Out error messages when accessing content. To rectify this problem, all you need to do is Enable Cookies on your PC and then refresh the page.

To enable Cookies:

From the top menu bar choose Tools
Select Internet Options from the dropdown menu
Click on the Privacy tab
Move the slider to Accept all cookies, or use the Edit button to allow Cookies for the Infotrac site.

ScienceDirect Journal Backfiles

The Library has recently purchased backfiles of Elsevier electronic journals in the area of economics, econometrics & finance. Usually our electronic coverage of journals from the ScienceDirect collections dates from 1994 but these collections will extend our holdings to Volume 1 Issue 1 for most titles. Please note that there are a small number titles on these lists to which extended coverage does not apply.

The Library already owned the backfile of the business, management & accounting collection and their coverage/title lists have been extended slightly.

Modern research assessment exercises like PBRF emphasise the measurement of outputs, the most important of which are publications. Similarly it is important to be able to trace citations to published work, wherever these may appear.

This session aims to fulfil the following objectives:

An understanding of the role of citation counts in research assessment and of their limitations;
An understanding of the variations in bibliometric data between disciplines;
An ability to make informed decisions on the choice of journals in which to publish;
An enhanced ability to measure and interpret individual research outputs;

This reference work is available electronically to all Massey University staff and students, and is a comprehensive work containing lengthy articles from experts in each field. Each entry includes a full bibliography.

The Library is pleased to announce a revamp of its award-winning web site. Access to all your favourite resources and services has been enhanced. The Library is currently trialling this electronic resource. The Digital Library features content from over 150 McGraw-Hill publications, covering around 12 major areas of engineering and more than 200 topics.

Need to know if a journal is peer-reviewed?

The library subscribes to a database called Ulrich's Periodical Directory.

Ulrich's is a directory of journals, newspapers and magazines, providing information about current and ceased publications.
It can be searched to find information about a particular title, or to find what journals are published in a particular subject area.
The information provided includes publisher details, whether a journal is refereed, citation information, whether the title is available electronically etc. The database is updated weekly.

This information is useful for both deciding about the authority of articles you may be citing, and helping you decide where to publish.

Ulrich's is available from the Library website via the e-journals page, and the article databases page.

Web of Knowledge - Tips and Tricks

Be notified when the latest issue of your favourite journal comes out

By registering on the Web of Knowledge website, you can set up email alerts for the latest Academic Journals, run saved searches automatically and be alerted when an article is cited.

To register:

Select Web of Knowledge from the A-Z database list on the Library Homepage

Click on register

Fill in your details on the form

Once you have registered you can Sign in any time you are using a Web of Knowledge Database (e.g. Current contents, Web of Science, Journal Citation Reports).

Citation Alerts:
If you have an article indexed in Web of Science, you can ask the database to email you every time a new citation occurs.

My Journal List:
This allows you to create lists of journals and have the Table of Contents emailed to you when the new issues come out.

My Saved Searches:
If you have a search that you carry out regularly, you can save the search and ask Web of Knowledge to run it on a regular basis. The results of the search will be emailed to you. Alternatively, you can save the search and choose to run it manually.

Business Source Premier and Endnote

Direct Exporting Records - a suggestion

When exporting records from Business Source Premier to Endnote, rather than saving the file to your desktop and then importing to Endnote using a filter, try direct exporting. Although you will still need to check every record, it simplifies the process and you don't end up with all those txt files on your desktop!

The main thing to watch for is the Reference Type for each record. Endnote will mostly default the records to Generic, you will need to change the type to, for example, Journal Article.
Also, some titles will come across in all capitals. This is a quirk of Business Source Premier record entry. Unfortunately Endnote is not smart enough to correct these and you will need to fix it manually.

See the instructions below for direct exporting.

If you would like some help or training with Endnote, please feel free to contact your Liaison Librarian.

Go to Business Source Premier, carry out your search and put the records you want to save into your folder.

Click on the folder icon (along the top of your screen).

Choose the option to Save to Disk

Click on the bibliographic manager tab

Select the radio button to Save citations in direct export format.

Click save.

This will open Endnote and ask you to select a Reference Library.

Locate and select the appropriate Library. The records are automatically dropped into the Library.

The records will need editing. Especially check the Reference Type, you need to tell Endnote what type the record is, it will default to Generic. Then check the rest of the record and edit what needs to be edited.

When you have checked and edited all your references, select Show All References to combine into your Library.

2004 data has now been loaded into the Journal Citation Reports. Access by clicking here, or go to the Article Databases page on the Massey University Library web site and select Web of Knowledge, then click on the link to Journal Citation Reports.

There are a variety of other resources that can also be used to evaluate journals and measure citations. Please contact any of the Business Liaison Librarians for assistance.

Access to Hansard

We have recently subscribed to Legislation NZ on the Knowledge Basket.

This provides us with access to Hansard, which you can search or browse. If you are looking for Legislation (Acts or Regulations etc) it would be more appropriate to search via Brookers.

Via Legislation NZ you can also access the Lawhawk News site. Items appearing in the weekly update LawHawk News, are an eclectic selection. From the editor, "You get my opinion on what is new and useful.LawHawk News is not a comprehensive update on primary material - other sites referred to in LawHawk Library provide that service. It is about new things that interest me and show progress in the legal internet media."

Access to the Legislation NZ site will soon be available from the Databases list on the Library website, in the meantime you can access it via this link
