Business Source Premier and Endnote

Direct Exporting Records - a suggestion

When exporting records from Business Source Premier to Endnote, rather than saving the file to your desktop and then importing to Endnote using a filter, try direct exporting. Although you will still need to check every record, it simplifies the process and you don't end up with all those txt files on your desktop!

  • The main thing to watch for is the Reference Type for each record. Endnote will mostly default the records to Generic, you will need to change the type to, for example, Journal Article.
  • Also, some titles will come across in all capitals. This is a quirk of Business Source Premier record entry. Unfortunately Endnote is not smart enough to correct these and you will need to fix it manually.
See the instructions below for direct exporting.

If you would like some help or training with Endnote, please feel free to contact your Liaison Librarian.

Go to Business Source Premier, carry out your search and put the records you want to save into your folder.

Click on the folder icon (along the top of your screen).

Choose the option to Save to Disk

Click on the bibliographic manager tab

Select the radio button to Save citations in direct export format.

Click save.

This will open Endnote and ask you to select a Reference Library.

Locate and select the appropriate Library. The records are automatically dropped into the Library.

The records will need editing. Especially check the Reference Type, you need to tell Endnote what type the record is, it will default to Generic. Then check the rest of the record and edit what needs to be edited.

When you have checked and edited all your references, select Show All References to combine into your Library.
